Acute Mountain Sickness

One of our doctors, Matthew Keys, has pointed out an excellent site to read about AMS (or Acute Mountain Sickness). It gives a good overview of how to avoid AMS, and how to treat it. All this will be in the manual provided, but if you want to do some pre-reading, head over to http://www.nepalonline.net/hra/ and check it out.

We are pleased to welcome aboard CSL Vaccines as an expedition sponsor. Not only have CSL volunteered to supply the first 110 participants with a range of necessary vaccines, but they have today also agreed to provide us with an expedition T-shirt! We are adding T-shirt size to the medical form so that we can get the right sizes for you all :-)

If you click on Links, you will see some information about some of our sponsors, including CSL.

Change in Climbing Leaders

Tim Macartney-Snape is now unable to accompany us on the expedition due to unforeseen circumstances within Australia. Tim expressed his regret at the Information Forum last week, but assures us that he will arrange an excellent set of Nepalese climbing leaders to take his place. Tim will be staying on as a consultant to the expedition and will be helping us plan and prepare for the climbing and trekking on the trip.

Applications Closing at the end of August

We have asked Austereo to stop all advertising for the expedition, and applications will close at the end of August. The expedition has taken some 2000 calls to express interest and has many more applicants than positions. All applications received before the end of August will be considered for selection, and successful applicants informed in Mid-September.

Expedition Oversubscribed!

The staff of the expedition had a great time meeting some of you last Friday night at the Information Forum in Melbourne. We were gratified that about 200 people turned up to get more information (although the room was designed for 120!) and we enjoyed answering the myriad of questions from the floor.

We have now received more applications to participate in the expedition than we can possibly take. Planning work is being done to see if we can take some additional applicants as expeditioners.

One of our Science Project Leaders is currently investigating the merits of doing some survey work in the South of Nepal involving Elephant and Water Buffalo. We are excited about the possibilities and working with local authorities in the hope that a reasonable project can be put together in time.
